Will you be able to have an MD-PHD If you want to become a cardiovascular surgeon? In: Graduate Degrees |
[Edit] |
Answer
It is not necessary. A plain old MD with the proper training in cardiovascular surgery (residency/fellowship) is what you need. A PhD, the highest degree conferred in the world, is largely a researh degree. This can be obtained while earning an MD (2 years didactic MD curriculum, 4 ot 6 years PhD work which includes 2 years didactic and as much time as required to complete the research and defend the dissertation...which is NOT UP TO YOU), and then the 2 remaining years for clinics to complete the MD, plus residency. That yields a MD-PhD which is not for you if you really don't want to do research. I mentor MD-PhD students so I can tell you that this should be thought of well in advance because of the time involved.
