Well, not that it helps, but he WAS in Superman I, II, and IV. Also, Hackman had three other movies come out that year (1983): Under Fire, Two of a Kind, and Uncommon Valor. It was probably just a creative descion to exclude Lex Luthor (Hackman's character) from the story line since Gene was busy. That's show biz kid.

Hackman refused to partake in this sequel and reprise his role as Luthor. This was due to the way the Salkinds treated previous director Richard Donner by getting rid of him.
