Originally the camera was made to capture a moment in time quickly and exactly. Paintings often reflected the opinion of the painter in their art however photos show exactly what was happening. Photos can be biased but nonetheless they are real. Photography started becoming pretty well known around the civil war and that's where the first "imbedded" journalists began.
