Morphine was first extracted and isolated from Opium in 1804, in Germany by a pharmacist. He named in 'Morphine', after 'Morpheus'; the Greek god of dreams. It was used for pain relief, but it was not until the use and development of the hypodermic needle that it became widespread. So, your answer is; for medical uses.

If it is of interest, Heroin was derived from morphine in 1874 and brought to market by Bayer in 1898. Heroin is approximately 1.5-2 times more potent than morphine on a milligram-for-milligram basis.
