Why is movie theater popcorn so expensive?

[Edit]

The reason why movie concessions are so expensive is because the theater has to buy the movie to show. This is expensive for them, and they don't make enough money to cover it by charging for tickets. So they just charge a bit more for their foods and drinks. I would prefer that to higher admissions. You have to pay for admission, but you don't have to buy snacks.

Another answer:

Its called a "captive" audience. They can charge what they want because simply, they can. You have no other vendor there. Concessions are a major source of income for most theatres.
