Why do you have to type in random characters to answer a question? |
'Captcha'ing the Spambots
At the bottom of answer boxes when answering unanswered questions you will now see a request to enter five characters that appear in an image.
We put this in place to prevent "spambots": computer programs that spider the web automatically posting offensive messages and advertising. Entering the characters from the images proves that you're a human being. This sort of filtering device is called a CAPTCHA program.
Spambots became such a problem that we needed to implement a technical solution. We apologize for the inconvenience. However, if you log in with your username and password, you will not be requested to fill these in.
