The holiday on the first Monday in October in South Australia is Labour Day. It is the same as the Labour Day (or Labor Day) celebrated all over the world, which came about as a result of the efforts of the labour union movement.

Whilst Labor Day is usually celebrated on May 1 in many countries, in Australia the Labour Day public holiday is determined by the different state and territory governments: consequently, its date varies. In the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and South Australia, it is held on the first Monday in October. In both Victoria and Tasmania, it is the second Monday in March (although Tasmania calls it Eight Hours Day). In Western Australia, Labour Day is the first Monday in March. In Queensland and the Northern Territory, it is the first Monday in May. It is always held on a Monday to enable Australians to have a long weekend...
