In general, no one seems to know all of the reasons, but emotion of any sort can trigger tears. It doesn't necessarily have to be sad emotion. You can be enormously happy, or grateful, or other things. Spiritual emotions as well can cause tears, because of the overwhelming emotion involved. Or being really, really in love with someone... sometimes that outpouring of feeling can cause you to cry... creating a situation that seems contradictory, because you are happy, not sad, and we traditionally associate tears with sadness. Not always so, however. :)
