Why do people use pens?

[Edit]

Answer

I think that pens are used because they are permanent ink--once dry, the writing does not smudge as pencil does.  In the "olden" times, a quill or other implement was used in conjunction with a bottle of ink.  Over time, the fountain pen, which has an ink cartridge, and the "Lindy" or "Bic" pens (the ink goes even further) came into being. With different tips, script can vary in width and darkness.
