Why do people kill others?

If you believe in the theory of evolution which teaches that we are mindless blobs of matter ultimately without any meaning and determined merely by our DNA code and that 'nature red in tooth and claw' in which we are just a highly evolved animal is normal, then you have their answer. It is just our desire for survival of the fittest and cannot be wrong. Stalin, in following this line to its logical conclusion said that 'killing a million people is no different to mowing a lawn.' So, in this philosophy, 'it's just our survival instinct and if I'm more fit than you, that's your problem.'

If you believe the Bible, then it is the result of human nature which is corrupted by turning away from God by actual choice, and by its very inherited tendency, inherited from the first humans, Adam and Eve. This, which the Bible calls the sin nature, leads to all kinds of things including anger and even murder. Ultimately it is a state of rebellion against God, which says in effect, 'I am my own god - don't tell me what to do!' This was not and is not God's intention for man. Love and peace and harmony with Him (first) through His Son, Jesus Christ, and then with each other is God' s intention. Those who are 'born again' have not only the willingness, but the actual power to turn away from sin, including murder. That people don't is demonstration of their exercising a free choice to sin, and kill - God does not force people to obey Him, although it is ultimately better for individuals and for society as a whole if we do.
