Answer
Dave, the very way you phrase your question suggests you believe astrology is a belief system. It is not. Astrology is an ancient sacred science that has been in use for millenia by various cultures to answer questions not answerable by ordinary means.
It's important to distinguish between popular 'sun sign' astrology and real astrology (Western style) that looks at many more factors than just one's sunsign alone--as revealing as that can be. Most sunsign astrology is vague at best. Real astrology is pinpont accurate and specific. Research if you will the turn-of-the-century trial of astrologer Evageline Adams in New York to learn about astrology's own "Scopes Monkey Trial".
The answer to why astrology works is that it measures subtle energies not yet measurable in physical laboratories. Check it out before you condemn a sacred science that has been around for ages. Otherwise you're guilty of 'unscientific thinking' yourself, right? Our ancestors were not morons. They wouldn't use a science if it didn't produce usable results.
Consider= The scientific community poopooed the idea of continental drift until just recently. The new gods of wisdom in Academia were wrong about plate tectonics just as they are still wrong about astrology.
A PhD doesn't confer a knowledge of everything, including the subtle spiritual energies which astrology, among other sacred sciences, does address and explain.
