Roses are usually considered the romantic flowers. Red for love, yellow for friendship, etc. Although roses are extremely beautiful, there are other flowers that are now becoming just as popular:

Designs are becoming more modern and simple, yet some people like a "granny garden" floral display. Oriental designs are fast rising here in Canada. Good, because I love Japanese anything! LOL

There are so many varieties of flowers and all are beautiful. I think it's a person's personal preference and any flowers you may send someone or receive are beautiful and popularity really doesn't come into it.
