Here are some memories from FAQ Farmers: There is a painting of the Grace Lines steamer Santa Eliana rounding the Straits of Magellan posted on ebay. Look for "Water Color Grace Lines Santa Eliana.
- It is a cruise line carrier. I have some 35mm film taken before the war of a ship named the SANTA ELENA. There is a nice picture of a little girl leaving the ship, I think after the cruise. It shows the gang plank with a canvas top and on the side is block lettering GRACE LINES.
- I transitted the Panama Canal around 1970 on a Grace Lines ship. Living in the Canal Zone at the time, you could get tickets if they were available for a free passage of the Panama Canal on a Grace Lines ship. My parents were visiting me for 10 days, and we were able to transit the Canal on an eight-hour passage through all the locks from Caribbean to Pacific. We were given a complimentary room with a shower and all the meals during the time period from high tea to a luxurious buffet dinner. Some of the best things truly are free!
- I WORKED FOR THE GRACE LINE CO. FOR 5 YEARS IN THE MID 60S. I WAS A LONGSHOREMAN ON THE WEST SIDE OF NYC. AND WORKED AT THE GRACE LINE PIERS 57 AND 59 NORTH RIVER. MY FATHER AND UNCLE WORKED FOR THE GRACE LINES FROM THE 1930S. I'VE WORKED ON JUST ABOUT ALL OF THEIR CRUISE AND CARGO SHIPS.
- I sailed on the Santa Barbara a passanger cargo ship owened by Grace Lines in 1965. We took cargo to viet Nam and had a long history with passengers before it became a cargo ship only. It was later renamed the cosmos trader. Grace line was long time a banana king in South America. The company Grace is now a large chemical company. I also sailed on the 125 passenger liner "M" Santa Monica ship which ended here life as a traning ship for Ma Maritime Academy a few years ago.
