it depends on the class... as im sure you know rich families lived in large castels made of sturdy masonry worth millions of dollars by todays standards. but the poor usually live in single room houses. one bed made of hay or straw and they slept close to the farm animals (start of small pox). if they couldnt afford conventional building supplies it wasnt uncommon for peasant housing to be held together with straw and manure...
