So we can express ourselves without being plain and boring.
For exampl it sounds much better to say
"It was phenomenal"
when someone asks you how the eclipse was instead if saying"it was cool, its strange how science works" and bumbling like a fool.
A lot of people like people with larger vocabulary. Thanks to a thesaurus you can express yoursef in numberless ways.

A thesaurus is great to use when you are writing and looking for just the right word for something.
