What is the philosophy behind an open air school?

[Edit]

Open-air schools were founded as an international movement from 1907 to improve the health of delicate and sick children unable to attend school. Many children were suffering such poor health that they were unable to take advantage of education due to illness ccaused by malnutrition, poor living conditions and tuberculosis. England's first open-air school opened in 1907. A history of the background and general development of the open-air school movement is described in some detail in the publlshed book 'A Breath of Fresh Air: Birmingham's open-air schools 1911-70' by Frances Wilmot and Pauline Saul [1998, Phillimore and Co].
