An alternative view says: Considering ALL NCAA Division 1 Basketball Coaches...
...The Winningest Division 1 Basketball Coach of ALL is Actually Tennessee Women's Coach Pat Summit
- I would just like to say that, technically, Pat Summit, the Women's Basketball coach at Tennessee, actually surpassed them (Top 10 Men's Divivion 1 Coaches) in NCAA Division 1 Basketball wins. Even though it is women's basketball ,it still counts. So #1 is Pat Summit, who is now sneaking up on her 900th win.
- The following text is a cut and paste from a March 22,2005 article on the CoachSummit.com web site:
- "The Tennessee coach broke Dean Smith's career victory record Tuesday night, getting No. 880 in the Lady Vols' 75-54 win over Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Summitt tied Smith at 879 with an easy win over Western Carolina in the first round Sunday night and passed the former North Carolina men's coach with another convincing victory. Summitt improved to 880-171, while Smith was 879-254 when he retired in 1997 after 36 years with the Tar Heels."
- Summit's 880-171 record gives her a .837 winning percentage that tops Clair Bee's(Men's best) .826 rate.
A dlssenter notes: Pat Summitt's coaching wins from 1974 through 1981 are not considered NCAA wins
- Women's College Basketball was still under the aegis of the NAIA.
Pat Summitt has 913 wins as a coach at Tennessee. However, 175 of those wins came at a time when women's basketball was under the aegis of the AIWA, and not the NCAA.
Correction: Pat Summitt has 947 overall wins, not 913. Her NCAA coaching record shows 772 overall wins as a NCAA coach.
