The heaviest defeat Nigeria have suffered was at World Cup 1998. Nigeria finished top of Group D, finishing above Paraguay who also qualified the shock exit were for Spain and Bulgaria from the cup. Nigeria met Denmark in the last sixteen and went on to lose this game 4-1, with goal from Peter Møller, Brian Laudrup, Ebbe Sand and Thoams Helveg. Tijjani Babangida scored the only goal for Nigeria on the night.
