As of 2/08, Intel Core 2 Duo is the best (unless you are very few who know you'll need their Extreme Core). It's the fastest, has better battery life, stays cooler, etc. Core Duo is OK if you want to save a little $. AMD has slipped a lot in this race! Stay with 1.67 MHz speed if not more. Vista requires at least 1 gig of RAM & does better with 2. <end of my answer - forget the following>
Opt for something that does not run hot like the Intel Pentiums do, unless you like having your machine freeze and reset when you are in the middle of typing a paper or talking to your family across the pond.
I would go for an AMD FX2 Dual Core 64 bit processor, if I had the means.
