What is the age and value of a Winchester Model 94 30-30 serial 4431631 in good condition? |

Answer
Value is determined by a number of factors besides condition, including any "special issue", documentation, etc.
Here's how to determine age: Go to http://www.oldguns.net/ (Antique and Collectible Firearms and Militaria HQ website)
Scroll down the "blue area" on the left side of the screen to "Manufacture Dates"; continue down to, and click on, "Winchester"; select model, type in serial number and, voila ! up pops the date the piece was made.
The "Information" section, (in the same blue area and just prior to "Manufacture Dates") lists the NRA Condition Grading Definitions For Antique Firearms (you might want to visit this area first).
Here's where the standard grades/classifications are listed that are the basis for assigning value based on condition of the piece. Use these carefully and be bluntly honest with yourself; an appraiser or potential collector/purchaser sure will be. There is an altogether "human" tendency for the owner to think the piece is in better shape (and worth more) than a potential buyer would. Being human is sometimes a bummer, eh? Don't inflate the rating.
IMHO, the actual "value" of anything, especially firearms, old cars, musical instruments, etc., also depends on any sentimental attachment you may have to it ("but this was granpa's"), and, more importantly, how much someone is willing to pay for it. Consequently, the 'appraised value" of your weapon, based on condition, age, etc. will generally be higher than you can sell it for....i.e., what someone else is willing to pay for it.
Hope this helps. Flame suit is on....
