What is skin cancer? In: Skin Cancer [Edit categories] |
[Edit] |
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in human beings.
More than 95% of skin cancer is non-melanoma skin cancer. Technically there are two types of non-melanoma skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, but they are similar in terms of symptoms and treatment.
Malignant melanoma is much less common and considerably more serious. It can metastasize (i.e., spread) through the blood, lymph nodes, or vital organs.
Treatment involves surgery to remove the cancer and, occasionally, topical chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The cure rate is high, but it may return.
