Sin is a religious concept and depends upon the religion. In general, it is something the religion considers wrong or in violation of something it values.

Christian Answers

The simplest way to explain sin is that it is anything unpleasing to God.

I agree with the above answer and would like to add that the scriptures of the Bible also give us the answer as follows, If you know to do right and do it not , it is a sin.

Sin is described as a willful transgression of Gods law. Anything that is done wilfully and knowing that it is wrong is a sin. Someone may do something that they do not know is wrong and they will not be held accountable but if they find out that it is wrong and do it again, then they will be responsible.
