What is energy efficiency? In: Energy [Recategorize] |
[Edit] |
Answer
Refers to programs that are aimed at reducing the energy used by specific end-use devices and systems, typically without affecting the services provided. Such savings are generally achieved by substituting technically more advanced equipment to produce the same level of end-use services (eg lighting, heating, motor drive) with less electricity.
The Meaning of Energy Efficiency
Scientifically speaking, using energy efficiently can mean two different, yet related, things.
1)The first meaning: Using as little energy as possible to get the same result as using a great deal of energy. This is accomplished by using a similar type of energy source that is capable of producing larger amounts of power (energy) but at a lower energy use level -- in order to get the same job done.
Basically, you are using less energy by choosing a power source that is capable of providing the same amount of power to get your job done, but is using less energy to do the same job. (Example: lighting a lamp, see detailed explanation below)
2) The second meaning is: Using a completely different, alternate source of energy to accomplish a goal. The first source can be inefficient in several ways all depending on the job you wish to accomplish. The alternate source can produce a better product, or use less energy, or be cleaner, more environmentally friendly. (Example: fueling a car, see detailed explanation below)
Examples Explained in Detail:
1) Instead of using an incandescent light bulb to light a lamp, which uses a large amount of energy, you could switch to a fluorescent light bulb, which uses a smaller amount of energy to produce the same amount of light.
2)If you drive a hybrid car which uses a mix of gas and electricity, you are creating two fuel efficiencies: first, you are using less gas, and second you are using electricity, which is more environmentally friendly, because it's a cleaner source of energy.
One day, hopefully, you will be able to switch to, or we'll all be driving electric cars, which is very fuel efficient, since you use less energy to go as far as the gas fueled engine, and it's good for the environment.
