What is an electrolyte?

[Edit]

Answer

It is a substance that, when you dissolve it in water, can split (dissociate) into charged parts called ions.

For this reason electrolytes can carry electricity.

The word "electrolytes" is often used to refer to substances that the body needs. A marathon runner is better off drinking an appropriate mixture of electrolytes (such as sodium, calcium, and chloride) than simply drinking water.
