What is a word that means had visions in sleep?

Unfortunately, I am not sure of the exact term but this subject does interest me.

In late August 2001, I woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat after suffering a horrific nightmare. It struck me odd becuase of how real it truly felt and the fact that I often do not have nightmares or even many dreams that I can recall the next day. I abruptly woke up my girlfriend who was laying next to me at the time to discuss it.

I dreamt that missiles struck downtown Manhattan and the sky turned completely black. I recalled people running around every which way and screaming. I saw flames reaching up to the sky and smoke coming up from the subways.

This nightmare ocurred two weeks prior to the devastating events of 9-11.

Over, the years I haven't given the nightmare much serious thought and dismissed it as stress induced. See, at the time, I was actually working as a broker for Morgan Stanley in Florida and was awaiting a company transfer to NYC to work in the World Trade Center. I accepted the dream as merely a product of my anxiety concerning my potential relocation to a much larger city and workplace and saw the terrorist attack weeks later as a sheer coincidence.

However, I do occasionally still think about it. I don't claim on ever having visions and don't really believe in such a thing nor was this nightmare what prevented me from being there at the time of the attack. My transfer papers were still being processed and actually destroyed when the towers went down and my move wouldn't even have been completed until late September or even early October for that matter.

I wonder if anyone else has ever had things like this happen to them before. Sometimes, I think that the subconscious mind is an extremely powerful thing and often dreams can represent themselves in later everyday life.
