The Gothic Lolita fashion has been widely popularized internationally but mainly in Japan, stepping slowly into the mainstream after the brand Moi-même-Moitié was created in 1999. Mana, the brand's creator, coined such terms as 'Elegant Gothic Lolita' and 'Elegant Gothic Aristocrat' to market his clothing label, and has become a key figure in starting the international infatuation with the style. Mana is a former band member of the now defunct visual kei band Malice Mizer.
Gothic Lolita style is characterized by 18th to late 19th century western fasions, particularly pulling from lavish Rococo decorative styles, essences of Baroque period styles, and elegant Victorian influences.
Typically, you can spot Gothic Lolita stylings by lace-trimmed dresses and modest blouses paired with skirts. The dresses and skirts are typically knee-length or longer. Petticoats or crinoline are often used to create the whimsical 'Alice' look that many people attritube this style to.
