Long Playing...Records?
The assumption is that you are asking about "Long Playing Records". Original records were made to revolve at 78 revolutions per minute. They had very poor frequency response, but since there hadn't been anything like it before, people were happy with the ability to play music on a record player, even though it sounded poor.
Much later, new technology was invented. Records that had been slowed to 45 RPM and had a far better frequency response. The smaller records were quite popular but only held one song per side. At about the same time, LP records were also introduced. They were much larger, about the same size as the old 78 RPM records, and since they ran at a much slower speed (33 1/3 RPM) the music industry was able to put many songs on a single record.
