Answer
This is the story I've always heard.
A Lord fell in love with a common maiden and wanted desperately to ask her for marriage. Her father was dead against it, claiming the Lord only wanted her virginity and did not want to have her as a wife. The Lord designed a ring to prove his love.
The heart to symbolize his undying love and devotion.
The crown for his loyalty.
The hands for his friendship to her.
Hence the claddagh often being associated with the tagline "Love, Loyalty, Friendship"
If you are married, wear it on your right ring finger with the heart part of the ring facing your heart with the crown facing your fingernail. If you are engaged, wear it on your right ring finger with the heart facing out. If you are in a relationship, wear it on your left hand with the heart facing in. If you are single, wear it on your left hand with the heart on the ring facing out.
