What does it mean when a defendant pleads 'no contest'?

[Edit]

Nolo contendre

You are not admitting you did anything but are choosing not to defend the charges.

Guilty

It means you do not deny the charge and goes in the record as a guilty plea, but without the state having to prove anything and without admitting any specific facts that can be used against you. The sentence may be reduced in exchange for skipping the trial, often coupled with a plea bargain.
