What can you do to a 1981 Datsun truck to make it faster without spending any money? In: Datsun [Recategorize] |

Answer
1.Get a used tractor or truck turbo!2.Weld a pipe that fits the outlet of the manifold in one end and intake of turbo in the other end.3.Hose it up,preferrably through an intercooler before the intake. You don't mention if you have diesel or gas engine, but if diesel, this would definitely do the trick.Gas is alittle more difficult,as the old nikki carb cant take the pressure. It will leak.Get a s.u. or stromberg from a volvo and bolt it to the intake on the turbo, which now must be mounted higher than the intake with as short pipes as possible. For decompression, use a crankshaft from a smaller L-type engine,as 14-16-1800 are the same.I reckon you have an 1800 in your truck,1600 is same bore but shorter stroke. But:the 1800 has shorter con-rods,so you will get lower compression if they are used with a crankshaft from a smaller L-engine.The same trick can also be done with L-series six,2,0-2,4-2,6-2,8.And all others with varying displacement on the same block.Basically, you want as low compression as possible on a turbo engine thats supposed to run like hell,as there is room for more combustible mix above the piston, and the more oxygen and fuel you get burnt the more power.Good luck with exceeding the 1000-hp limit on your Datsun!P.S.:One more tip:You should replace the valve springs with stiffer ones as the original ones will start to float around 6000 rpms.Springs from a volvo B18 or B20 (amazon,140)will fit directly on Datsun L-engines and you will neatly rev the engine over 10.000 rpms...Just make sure to use a proper grade of oil or it will eat camshafts.Lykke til, hilsen Arve,Norway.
