Jacob means "holds the heel" in Hebrew; so called because he was grasping his twin brother Esau's heel when he was born.

He was called Israel by an angel of God who appeared to him one night after he wrestled with him.

Israel means "struggled with God," or 'God rules," or "upright with God."

Israel also came to be the name of the nation of all the descendents of Israel; also known as "the children of Israel," or "Israelites."
