I wouldn't buy anything smaller than a 500 cc motor. Anything smaller will burn up quickly driving that far everyday.

I'm a 5'6" male and started out riding on a 1994 Honda Shadow VT600, which I was very happy with. It was light, ran well, and had a very low seat height. I've now upgraded to a 2005 Kawasaki Vulcan 800. Also relatively low seat height, but a bit bigger and more comfortable. If you are looking for a cruiser, I'd recommend either of these bikes. Your best bet for a first bike would probably be something in the 600-800 cc range.
