What are the origins of the letter 's'?

[Edit]

The Letter S

Letter S. A great letter. Although letter C sometimes makes the same initial sound, letter S is the only letter dedicated to that sound. To me, it is also a lot more elegant and sinuous. Plus, letter C could be removed completely from the alphabet and we would get along just fine... replacing all instances of C with K or S.

It is believed by some that the letter S was developed from ancient Greek. If you'll look at the illustration of the letter Sigma on this site: http://www.mathacademy.com/pr/prime/articles/greek/index.asp, you will see that sigma was written as something that appears kind of S-ish.

If you'd like to purchase your own letter S, here is one site: http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?origin=page.jsp&namespace=browse&event=link.itemDetails&categoryId=342679&BP=8108&cm_mmc=Trafficleader-_-Datafeed-_-Datafeed-_-Datafeed&sku=65%2f90019

there are many, many others. :)
