What are mammoths?

[Edit]

Mammoth

A Mammoth is an extinct genus of proboscidean (of which the Elephant belongs), often with long curved tusks and, in northern species, a covering of long hair. They lived from 4.8 million years ago to around 3,500 years ago. There are some 11 species of mammoth known from the fossil records, and they are distributed broadly across the earth.

A word more recently used to mean massive or very large.

A link is provided to the Wikipedia article on the mammoth. Many more facts are easily gathered, there. Some good pictures and drawings are also on display.
