What are conversation starters to make your 16-year-old daughter talk to you? |

Answer
I don't know if you are the mother or the father. If the mother "hit the malls!" Let her take you to the places she likes and don't be afraid to try on some of the younger clothes just so you both can have a good laugh. Treat her to one of her favorite salons to get her hair done and yours. Try asking for advice for a change and within reason perhaps a slightly funky hair-do would be a good change for you or some streaking. I wear my hair short in a nice funky style (acceptable in the business world) and have dark brown hair with some soft blond streaks in it. Get a facial! Go to a spa and have a mini facial. These are all things young girls are in. Be sure to ask for her advice on clothing, hairstyles, etc., whether you need the advice or not. This shows her you respect what she thinks. Ask her about her boyfriend or if she has a boyfriend. NEVER show your disapproval at the beginning and only after you have a better relationship going. Learn to laugh together.
For fathers, the malls are the same. Go into the store, pay the price! Try to appear interested and don't stand there like you've been hit with a cattle prod when your daughter asks you if you like the outfit she is trying on in the store. No matter if the top is slit to the naval, take a big gulp and say she looks nice, but get her to try a few other clothes on. Your baby is growing up! Go out for dinner, teach her to drive (if she isn't already) or hang out at one of her favorite spots such as a coffee shop (Starbucks, etc.) and ask her if she has a boyfriend and if so how are things going. Don't fake interest, but show it and don't judge her!
Good luck
Merry Christmas
