You have to compare models that are right for you. Most people will agree that Japanese cars are what to be buying now, but American cars can be found for good prices (the suvs especially).
The best option is to see what you're interested in on makers websites, check the models out on sites like driverside.com to see the cost of ownership, and how much repairs are (and also how much the car will retain its value), and then finally test drive the models you're deciding on.
