What 3 words in English end with gry? |
[Edit] |
Two are "angry" and "hungry". What is the third one?
There is no other common word ending in "-gry", so how did the puzzle come about? It first appeared in print in 1975.
Perhaps the answer to the original version of the puzzle was meagry or aggry (as in "aggry bead"). There are over 100 obsolete words that end in "-gry" (see below), and these two were in use until fairly recently. However, since there is no longer a real answer to this
Answer
Others that fit the bill are gry, puggry and aggry.
CORRECT Answer
To answer this question correctly, you have to know what the EXACT wording of the original question was. The wording has been corrupted over the years so that it is, in fact, unanswerable. But the original question does have an answer. And that orginal question was something like:
"Angry" and "hungry" are two common English words that end with "gry". What is the third word?
Note that the first sentence never claims that there are, in fact, three words that end with "gry". Nor does the second sentence limit "the third word" to be a word that ends with "gry"; it simply says "the third word". It could mean "the third word in Webster's dictionary", or "the third word in the Bible", or "the third word in the Declaration of Independence". For that reason, the question is, sort of, still unanswerable. However, with no other frame of reference, a logical conclusion is that the question refers to the third word in this sentence. And, I heard that someone finally tracked down the person who first asked this question, and he did confirm that this was his intent, "What is the third word (in this sentence)?" And the answer, of course, is "the".
At the very least, this is clearly a "trick" question. But the case can be made that, based on the vagueness of the "third word" criteria, it is, in fact, still a question with no answer. But however you look at it, the original wording of the question literally begs to be corrupted. It intentionally misleads the reader to believe that there are 3 common words that end with "gry", without ever actually stating that. So, naturally, someone is going to apply that interpretation to it when they repeat the question to others, and ask it in a form similar to how it appears above. And of course, as the question appears above, with the additional (unwritten) criteria that all three words have to be common, there is no answer, because there simply is not a third common English words that ends with "gry". And, as a previous poster pointed out, if you drop the "common" criteria, there are, in fact, several answers.
angry, hungry, unangry.
Answer
hungry/angry/ orgy but i heard there's a fourth word out there
100% Correct answer, I'm sorry but you were all incorrect to a certain degree...
This is actually a riddle and the wording has been slightly skewed so that it is unanswerable. Technically there are over a hundred obsolete "gry" words out there that are not commonly used anymore (hence the use of the word "obsolete") but none are the actual answer. The riddle should read:
Think of words ending in "-gry". "Angry" and "hungry" are two of them. There are only three words in "the English language." What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.
The answer to the riddle is, (drum roll please!) - language
