The Chinese produces the most cotton with approximately 20 million bales of cotton produced in 2000. The U.S. is second, with 17.2 million bales of production in 2000.

Ninety-eight percent of the cotton from the US is grown in 14 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The remaining 2 percent is grown in Kansas, Florida and Virginia.
