Was Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' inspired by World War I?

[Edit]
Yes, in fact there were numerous armies of goblins, orks and whatnot during world war one. Gandalf was really Franz Ferdinand.

The four hobbits in Lord of the Rings was based on Tolkien and his friends in World War One and their experiences. Two of the four were marines and the other two were soldiers. (Frodo and Sam were together while Mary and Pippin were together)

ANswer:

I think we're having our leg pulled :} JRR Tolkein specifically says LOTR is not inspired by, based on, or an allegory of either world war, preface to the 1978 edition I think.
