We lived on a hard-scrabble farm that would only grow briars and blackberries. Many a meal included blackberries, we would have blackberry strueddle(without the strueddle), blackberry cobbler(without the cobbler), blackberry tarts(without the tarts) and so forth. If the wolf ever came to our front door he had to bring his own lunch. Occasionally we would have meat when the kind hearted deacon in the church(the only one with a vehicle) would run over a varmint in the road. He was a nice man. In the winter my brother and I had to walk five miles thru snow and ice to get to school, and it was uphill both ways. On really bad days we wrapped barbed wire around our feet to keep from slippin(no shoes), they were for sunday go to meeting and we only had one pair between us and so took turns. But our house was so warm with love the iciciles on the fireplace mantle often amazed me. One cold day a herd of ducks lit on our pond. They spent the night and Daddy start out real early to capture one. The pond had frozen and the ducks feet were caught fast. But as daddy crept up he stepped on some ice. It crackled so loud it startled all the ducks and they up and flew away with our pond. Really.
As a babe my folks couldn't even afford a baby bed. I had to sleep in the box the color t.v. came in. Even so, my foks believed in education and we went to school. There were no cafeterias in school back then so we had to take what we ate. Most days we boys would eat for breakfast a half of a dried apple. At noon we would drink water to made the dried apple swell, really!
Now, on a lighter note, Marriedj(boy! am I married), five children, couple baseball teams of grandkids and some great and they sure are. Only have one biological brother but have an adopted sister. I have heartaches by the numbers and trouble by the score, oops, got off on a country and western song, pardone!. The vast portion of patriarchal and matrichal family are gone, ke-put, deceased and such and I'm not feeling so well.
I have a year of business college, two years jr. college and four of senior in crimminal justice and sociology. I have often been called a professional student by friends. Every time employment was slack, I went back to school. God has greatly blessed even before I was saved back in l962. For more years than I like to remember I have been an excuse for an adult sunday school teacher. This in it's self has been a very great blessing, forcing me to study even when not in the mood. I still have bad habits developed in learning institutions, that is, last minute cramming. The biggest thing I have learned about this is, study to show myself approved before God and wait on him to put the words in my mouth. One of my students is the pastor so!
There are two things I take with the utmost sincerity. One is God and I can't remember what the other is, so it must not measure up to much. I have much difficulty keeping humor out of conversations( and answering questions). Other than soul salvation, and nothing comes near that importance, I have found humor to lighten loads, make friends, cheer others up, etc.
What turns me off is people that are sooooo serious, expecially about themselves. I often regret, after watching youngsters today that I was ever a teenager. But then, that's life. (More later)
