How much motorcycle insurance coverage do you need and what options are best? |
[Edit] |
Answer
I am "new" to motorcycles and looking to get a bike this week. I did some search and following is what I found out so far:
- it's very expensive and I would change the question as "How much can you afford?". Buy the maximum you can afford. Simply because it's a hundred times less safe than any other vehicle on the road. - Where do you park your bike? If you have your own garage or private parking in a relatively safe neighborhood, you don't need the comprehensive coverage. It's one of the expensive items in the policies. You can get another bike with the comprehensive coverage premium that you will pay in 3-4 years. - Shop around! By finding a better deal you can afford better/higher coverage. Believe me, it's not as easy as getting an auto insurance. Most insurance companies don't even sell it. - Do you have other health insurance? You may want to consider buying minimum bodily injury insurance. However, refer to your existing health insurance before making a decision.
-Lastly, if any of my findings are wrong or don't make sense, I apologize for it. Please immediately clarify it to ensure we all are well informed on the matter.
One good source is aaa's online insurance quote system. Visit it just to see how much your premium changes with different options. It's a "relative measure" but gives you a good idea about your options.
Peace,
Murat
