How do you tell some one you can't do something for them?

[Edit]

If an individual is asking you to do something you really can not do for them, there is nothing wrong with telling them the truth. If it is possible, you should try to explain why you can not do it (if it is indeed a legitimate reason). However, I believe you should (out of sincerity) attempt to help him/her by exploring other options or alternatives. In this way the individual knows you are concerned about their circumstances.
