How do you mix prep and punk fashion to create a style that does not look contradictory to each other?

[Edit]
Answer

either way, prep and punk are two polar opposite genres and they really shouldn't be mixed unless you're able to make it work. But i haven't seen anyone accomplish it without looking like they're lost between two styles.

I'm not too sure, but SerTop sure has been making some preppy looking wrist/sweat bands. They are a good example

But they are still goth and ugly

American eagle jeans are real popular with the "punks" right now. them or maybe bullhead. A studded belt and maybe a Hurley shirt or an Abercrombie shirt.

Just go to a prep store and then a punk store and pick out some stuff and mix them together.

I disagree with the previous statement. There is no such thing as a "punk store", punk fashion is all about DIY. Create your own clothes instead of buying them from teenage conformist store like Hottopic or Abercrombie.

I think the easiest way (I use this method) is to wear prep clothing with punk accessories. Maybe wear some pieces that are part punk part prep. Examples of this would be ripped jeans. As long as they still look preppie, the rips add punk flair. For a full outfit try thick black eyeliner & bright makeup, abercrombie or ae or other prep formfitting tee, ripped jeans, studded belt, cuffs/multiple bracelets, and a striped necktie.
Or, one girl at my school usually wears ripped jeans with striped/patterned/bright tights underneath. This looks cute. ALSO: Bright tights under fishnets, and then preppie on top, yes?

Tell us how it works out.
OK, I love love love to shop and check out websites for tips. What I can suggest is a white collared shirt (preferably one that ties at the stomach, like Britney spears in hit me baby one more time) fish nets, a plaid mini with inverted pleats, (like a catholic school girl uniform, oh and inverted pleats are much better than) for shoes a basic pump will do, but it isn't very creative. Vans will work (the runners not the flats). Oh, and I almost forgot, wear a tie to go with it. It doesn't have to be a girls tie, and please don't wear one with tweety bird or anything slandering Bush. Wear a solid color, wear one that brings out a small color in the plaid skirt (like in kilt plaid, wear a green tie to bring out the green that would be unnoticeable)
Cheers !!!! raw~raw

I think the key to mixing fashion tastes which are quite opposite of one another is: more of one, less of another. If you prefer to be more "preppy," then, like the previous entry mentioned, dress preppy and use a COUPLE "punkish" accessories (like funky shoes, purse, jewelry, and/or hair). But keep the accessories to one or two, because then people would appreciate your style rather than poke fun at it.

Vise-versa for more "punk" and less "preppy."

Of course accessories isn't the only way to moderate and mix the styles. Sometimes just changing the make-up and hair can do the same thing. I wouldn't go too crazy with mixing the two if you don't want people to look at you like you're some Jean-Paul Gautier wanna-be model, or just a complete idiot with no sense of style.

The thing with style is it's not necessarily about copying the trends and beating it to a pulp. I would say style is really short for Personal Style. So have fun with it for goodness sake! Wear something because it looks good on you, not because it's in style (trends are cyclical if you haven't noticed, if it's not in style now, it'll come back in style in about 4-6 years). Clothing that is not flattering on the body is NEVER, i repeat, NEVER IN STYLE. I don't give a hoot what trend is in style, if it doesn't look good on you don't wear it, because you'll risk less if you don't wear than if you do.
