How do you know if your pregnant or if you have ovarian cysts when they are the same symptoms? In: Pregnancy [Recategorize] |

Answer
Well, they don't really have the same symptoms.
An ovarian cyst will cause pain in the lower abdomen, usually more on one side than the other. You would have to go see your doctor to be certain and s/he would either palpate (feel) your pelvis or use ultra-sound to see if there is a cyst there. If you get frequent cysts you may require treatment to prevent them. Most cysts will take care of themselves. If they get too large your doctor may recommend that you have it burst with sound waves or surgically removed.
Pregnancy comes with a lot of symptoms but lower abdominal pain should not be one of them. This could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilized egg has implanted in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus.) These pregnancies have a 0% survival rate for the zygote and can be dangerous for the mother if not removed. But, your average pregnancy (if there is such a thing) mostly involves your period ending but other than that no real extreme changes for the first few months (that are visible on the outside.) It may also include some or all of the following: tiredness, nausea, hunger (more than usual), swollen or tender breasts, mood swings, digestive troubles (constipation, heartburn, etc...) and/or headaches. Your doctor will be the best authority on if a pregnancy test is positive but it is well worth getting one at the pharmacy (get the kind with two test strips you might need the second one) and testing yourself. If it is positive schedule an appointment with your OB soon. If it is negative wait 2 weeks and try again. If it is still negative you are most likely not pregnant but if the second one comes out positive then make that appointment.
Hope this helps!
