How do you fix a motorcycle tire that has a nail stuck in it?

[Edit]

Answer

Remove the tire from the wheel and repair it from the inside with a patch.

Answer:

I would not recommend this. While it can be helpful as a temporary fix (it's better than sitting on the side of the road, for sure), a plug or a patch should only be used until you can get a new tire.

Look at it this way. If you have a blowout in a car, the other three wheels are fine, and you'll coast to a stop. Maybe you scratch up your rim, maybe the sudden loss of control scares you. But in most cases, you don't crash.

On a motorcycle, if you have a blowout, it's a pretty safe bet that you're going to bleed. When one tire goes, there's not much else holding that bike up.

A motorcycle is an expensive hobby, and it is just my personal opinion that if you cannot afford to replace a damaged tire within a week, you have no business owning that bike in the first place. Patches and plugs are helpful in a pinch (i'll admit, i've used a plug to help me get home), but I really don't consider a mended motorcycle tire safe at all. It's your decision on that one, it's your body you're putting in jeopardy.

Additional Comment:

I don't totally agree with the last writer.. If you get a nail in your tire and it is still in good shape and relatively new then put a plug in it and keep going... normally tires don't blow out because of a hole... blow outs are normally caused by extreme use... over use...and lastly running over objects on the road...

Yet, I would recommend that you take the tire to a professional after you repair it to insure that the tire is safe.. sometimes they see things we don't... since that is their job to know tires.
