How do you change the engine starter on an 1996 infiniti g20?In: Infiniti G20 [Recategorize] |
[Edit] |
Easy as hauling bricks.
First off, You have to be a contortionist. It's tucked up behind the engine and the access is tight. Also you'll need an extra set of hands. Jack it up high and don't forget to have good jack stands securely in place, as you may be underneath for a while.
Oddly enough, 2 of the bolts have to be taken out from the engine compartment! But get under there first, so you can see where they start from. Look at the situation for a while. Now is a good time to ask yourself, "Do I really want to do this?" If you answer yes......make sure your paxal prescription is up to date.
Take the positive terminal off the battery. Some how remove the 2 bolts holding the starter, out from under all those pipes and obstacles in the engine compartment.
If you still have patients left, get back underneath and remove another starter bolt , that is much easier than the other 2. Lower the starter and remove the nuts holding the wires in place. Did you see how short the wires are? How scraped up are your wrists and forearms? Who the H*ll decided to put the starter Here? Now shimmy the starter out. It's a Good time for a break.
Reverse the whole prossess, but get some help, Because after you connect those wires that are too short and get the starter in place; How are you going to put those bolts in? Good Luck, Eric J
Great Job Eric !!! I found this to be fairly difficult until I removed some other parts to gain easier access to the starter: so here are the steps I followed.
1. Jack front of vehicle leaving plenty of clearance (Think Safety)
2. Remove + battery cable and front drivers side wheel as well as the plastic which separates wheel area from engine compartment. Too easy, takes about a minute or so!
3. Remove the two bolts from the rear side of the flex pipe (attached to the catalytic converter) and allow the flex pipe to hang freely.
4. Remove the four bolts (above the flex part of the flex pipe) which secure a metal plate underneath the starter-making it near impossible to get to the starter. You will know which plate I am talking about when you attempt to reach around to get to the starter.
5. Identify and remove two starter bolts through the exposed area of the wheel well.
6. R & R the starter.
All total: about 45 minutes to Remove & Replace once you give into the pain of realizing the best way to accomplish this job is by removing all the stuff that is in the way.
