Do you need boat insurance for small boat that gets out only 2-3 times a year on a deserted lake and the rest of time it's locked-up in your home garage and the risk of insurable event is about zero? In: Boat Insurance |

Answer
For the small amount of money it cost to insure a seasonal boat it is well worth it for the 2 or 3 times that your boat would be exposed to other boaters and the liability that you are exposed to. If you are going to be cheap, selling your boat and renting one the few times you need it would be more frugal.
If you don't carry insurance you are open to a lawsuit that could possibly take away your lake house and every house you own. You leave yourself open to that. You may be able to notify the insurance company when you plan to use it and save some money. Keep in mind, anything can happen in this world. A hiker may be swimming, a parachuter may be off course, a plane may crash and you're trying to save people in your boat, and someone gets hurt getting in, or run over, or any number or terrible things that could happen.
