Can you have sex while you have a bladder infection? |
[Edit] |
Answer
I don't know why you would, considering the fact that you could give it to him/her. I got a bladder infection 2 to 3 days after sex, and it's not a good feeling.
Answer
You can have sex but it will be quite painful and will aggravate the condition. You can not "catch" a urinary tract infection. It is possible that you can transfer the bacteria to your partner but not the actual infection. A UTI is a bacterial infection in the urethra and very prominent in women more than men due to a shorter urethra in women. If you do have a UTI, see a Dr or midwife and get it cleared up. Sex will only make it worse and that is what causes it in most cases.
== Answer -- Yes, you can have sex if you have a mild bladder infection, however if it is more than a mild infection it may be too painful.
Two of the contributors above have stated that you can catch a urinary tract infection. This is just not true!!!
It is true that women get most UTI's from sex, bacteria are inadvertently "pushed" into the woman's urethra via the act of sex. This casues the discomfort with urination, frequent urination, etc. that accompany a UTI. It is NOT a sexualy transmitted disease and men alomost never get a UTI due to the protection of a longer urethra. Women who get frequent UTI"S can sometimes prevent them by urinating after sex, this flushes the bacteria out of the urethra and may prevent UTI's. Over the counter meds for UTI's have no effect and are a waste of money, if you have a UTI seek medical attention and get started on an antibiotic, they can worsen into a Kidney Infection which can lead to other more serious problems.

The person above is absolutely right! One thing I would add is that women who use a diaphragm as birth control are more likely to get bladder infections from sex, since the ring of the diaphragm helps push the bacteria up the urethra during sex.
Also, it would be a good idea to check your partner's hygiene, that is, how clean are his bathroom habits? If he is not cleaning off after using the toilet, his penis is covered with germs! This is a common way for MEN to get UTI's but the woman gets them more often, due to the shorter urethra.
I would avoid sex until the infection heals (again, the pushing does not help!) and ask your partner to wash his genitals before sex! This may sound crazy, but UTI's can move up the ureters (connected to the kidneys) and cause a kidney infection, which can be life-threatening. Also, the same germs that cause UTI's can also cause PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), which can lead to scarring, ectopic pregnancies (which can lead to death, if they rupture) and infertility!
